Last weekend, the Guardian Newspaper published a new comic by Audrey and her partner Eddie Campbell, as well as a short essay by Audrey detailing their collaboration. Here is the description from the Guardian website:

“To mark the British Library’s forthcoming exhibition of British comics, Guardian Weekend asked well-known authors to collaborate with graphic artists to create new works. Here, novelist Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife, and her long-distance partner comics artist and cartoonist Eddie Campbell, whose work includes illustrating Alan Moore’s From Hell, collaborate by email and shared instinct on a 21st-century story of love and paranoia.”

It’s so great to see authors using Reddit’s Ask Me Anything subreddit as a forum to connect with fans! A few months ago, Neil Gaiman teased details of the rumored American Gods TV series. Yesterday,Raven Girl author Audrey Niffenegger took to r/IAMA to talk about her classic time travel love storyThe Time Traveler’s Wife and her other works. Most exciting was when she shared insight into her forthcoming sequel, which focuses on Henry and Clare’s time-traveling daughter Alba. (If you buy the ebook from Zola Books, you’ll be treated to a 25-page excerpt from the sequel!)

For one, Alba’s got two husbands, one of whom is another time traveler! Not to mention, we’ll learn more about Chrono-Displacement and even get to see a familiar face. Sadly, the book won’t be out until about 2018, so get all your details here. Plus, Niffenegger shares which books she loves reading over and over.

What inspired Niffenegger to write The Time Traveler’s Wife: “The phrase ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ popped into my head, and I started wondering what sort of lady would marry a time traveler.”

What she read while writing: “I read some physics books for people who cannot cope with the math, that was very helpful. And I read quite a lot of articles that were coming out then about genetics.”

Whether she ever got confused working out all the minutiae of Henry and Clare’s lives together and apart: “No, I worked on the book for almost five years, so I had time to keep track of even the tiny details.”

Why she hasn’t seen the 2009 movie adaptation: “I did read the screenplay, and realized that the filmmakers were doing their own thing, so I decided to let go and I don’t feel the need to see it. I do think there have been good adaptations. I liked Cloud Atlas, both the book and the movie.”

Other books that mix sci-fi and fantasy elements with a contemporary love story: “Jack Finney‘s Time and Again is about to be reissued; I just wrote an introduction for it. And certainly Little, Big by John Crowley is a masterpiece; it’s got several love stories and fairies, too.

Why she decided to follow up on Alba: “I started working on Alba’s life because Zola Books was issuing the ebook for TTW and they asked for an ‘extra.’ Then I got a bit obsessed with her, and decided to keep working on it.”

How the world will respond to Chrono-Displacement in Alba’s future: “I’m not sure yet, though it is implied in TTW that the world knows about this and it has become an acceptable thing, though perhaps still rare. Oliver, one of Alba’s husbands, is from the second half of the 21st century, so he has seen much more evolution in society’s ideas about time travel.”

Will we get to see Henry in the Time Traveler’s Wife sequel? “Yes, he does manage to show up here and there.” (We see what you did there.)

Niffenegger’s top books of all time, that she’ll read over and over: “Harriet the Spy, The Woman In White, The Turn of the Screw, The Beast in the Jungle, The Secret History, Galatea 2.2, Gaudy Night, and The Goldfinch.”

A startup called Zola Books has paired with a popular novelist to try to save brick-and-mortar shops.

While no one in the publishing world wants to halt the march of digital distribution, many would like to ensure the neighborhood bookstore doesn’t go the way of the record store. That’s why there are a growing number of people in the industry who are looking to disrupt the disruptors and show Apple, Amazon, and Google how to do digital publishing right–by embracing the new while keeping the best of the old. One of those people is Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife–one of the most popular debut novels of the last decade. She’s recently become involved with, and invested in, a new digital publishing startup called Zola Books–an e-bookstore that, among other things, aims to help physical bookstores thrive in a digital age.

The New Dividing Line
The Frankfurt Book Fair, the largest trade show of its kind, ended its run this year on Sunday. Though, like always, the fair was dominated with deals being made for new novels, selling foreign rights for existing books, and a continuing discussion on e-books versus paper books, this year’s fair also saw a new level of wariness growing for the encroachment of the big three tech companies–Apple, Amazon, and Google–into a world many feel they care little about. As the fair’s director Juergen Boos told industry insiders and members of the press, “The dividing line is no longer between old and new, print and e-books, analog and digital. Instead it runs between those who have a passion for content and who want to provide access to it, and those who don’t really care what they’re selling.”
