PhotobucketUPDATE: The contest has closed. Winners of the Seer of Sevenwaters book giveaway are:

Number 19 Jeanne Kisacky

Number 45 Courtney Johnson

You’ll both be contacted shortly with details on your win. Congratulations!

Today marks the U.S. release of the fifth book in author and long-time Writer Unboxed contributor Juliet Marillier’s highly acclaimed Sevenwaters series. (I still remember seeing the first book in the series, Daughter of the Forest, in the bookstore when it was released in 1999 and saying to myself, I need to read that book. I did read it, and it has become one of my favorite novels.) This latest book, Seer of Sevenwaters, can be read as part of the series or as a stand-alone novel; you can read a sneak peak on Juliet’s website here.

We’re thrilled she’s with us today for a Take Five interview to tell us more about her latest work.

Q: What’s the premise of your new book?

JM: What if your strongest conviction was tested to breaking point, and you began to doubt yourself? What if your past was suddenly erased and you had to find your way in the dark? What if you could have the future you’d always dreamed of, provided you were prepared to build that future on lies? These dilemmas and others are explored in the various strands of the story, which is a blend of folkloric magic, adventure and human drama.

Q: What would you like people to know about the story itself?

JM: Sibeal arrives on the remote island of Inis Eala, a training centre for elite warriors, to spend a quiet summer with her sisters. Afterwards she expects to return to Sevenwaters and make her final commitment as a druid. But a Norse ship is wrecked off the island, and an unlikely trio of survivors is washed up. One has a sketchy story, one is mute and the third seems to be keeping silent for reasons of his own. Their presence creates disquiet, then precipitates violence amongst the well-ordered island community. When the truth behind the shipwreck finally comes out, Sibeal becomes part of a perilous rescue mission. What it uncovers causes her to question her deepest convictions.

SEER OF SEVENWATERS is part of my ongoing Sevenwaters series, set in early medieval Ireland. It’s also fine to read as a stand-alone novel.

Q: What do your characters have to overcome in this story? What challenge do you set before them?

JM: For Sibeal, the challenge is having her vocation tested, and discovering she is not immune from the emotional highs and lows of that critical period between girl and young woman. She believes she’s been sent away for the summer because her druid mentor has doubts about her suitability for the spiritual life. Although she’s young, Sibeal has always been a self-contained person. She has never allowed her emotions to escape control, nor has she ever seriously considered a life path other than druidry. What happens to her in this story causes her to re-examine her link with the gods and to question the level of obedience that they expect from her.

For Felix, the challenge is waking up with complete memory loss. He has no idea who he is or how he got to Inis Eala. But one thing he is sure of: a vital mission lies before him, and time is running out to achieve it. While he battles to remember, there is one person who will stop at nothing to prevent him from acting on those memories. Felix also confronts the challenge of living up to someone else’s heroic example, when he himself is more scholar than man of action.

Q: What unique challenges did this book pose for you, if any?

JM: I set myself a few hurdles to cross, notably by writing a good part of the book in Felix’s first person point of view. This is the first time I’ve written a novel with dual first person POVs, and it’s the first Sevenwaters book with a male co-narrator. Felix’s loss of memory meant present tense was the only viable option for his sections, while Sibeal’s sections are in past tense. Felix’s voice came easily to me. I was seriously ill and undergoing hard-core medical treatment while I was writing the first half of this novel, so the confused, somewhat poetic voice of a scholar with a head injury suited me quite well!

Sibeal’s sections were challenging in a different way. A reserved, self-controlled character is not the ideal first person narrator; it won’t come naturally to her to muse on her feelings, and she will tend to sit back and observe other people rather than leap in and get involved. I had to work hard on keeping her sections lively and interesting. There was no changing her character, as readers had met her in two earlier books – she was an old soul even at the age of eight.

Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of having written this book?

JM: Honestly? Number one would be simply getting it finished. They say breast cancer robs you of six months of work time, so I was very happy to deliver the completed manuscript only six weeks after the original submission deadline.

I’m also happy with the way the dual point of view worked out; I think it does enhance the storytelling. There’s an epic, folkloric strand to the story about which I’ve said almost nothing above, but that was the most fun of all to write and is probably the most entertaining element in the book. I loved creating a story of sea, storm and islands. SEER may be set in Ireland, but it felt like a return to my birthplace, New Zealand.

Readers, don’t forget to leave a comment here for a chance to win a copy of Seer of Sevenwaters! And take heart if you don’t win; you can find Juliet’s latest novel at brick-and-mortal bookstores across the nation and online. A perfect holiday gift!

Wow. The dual first-person point of view thing sounds very interested. I am super excited for this release! Juliet is probably one of my favorite authors.

    Juliet,

My heart was racing with excitement as I read this. Seer seems both thrilling and beautiful. The book has just arrived and I can’t wait to dive in! I have to thank you in advance for the hard work and all the soul you have put into this book, along with all of your other books. I shall be writing again at the end of my journey through Seer of Sevenwaters, and believe me when I say that it will be an absolute adventure for me!

    Thanks again Juliet!!!

I can’t wait to read this book, Juliet! Another insightful interview. It’s marvellous to read all the little teasers for the new book and to hear of your satisfaction with finishing it so shortly after the deadline despite your struggles. Well done!

  4. Sarah Nelson on December 7, 2010 at 4:21 am

First off, you having breast cancer scares the hell out of me. I don’t know what I’ll do if there’s ever a time that I’m not looking forward to a new book from you.

The premise of Seer Of Sevenwaters seems to be one that everyone can relate to. You have a whole future envisioned for yourself and rarely (if ever) does it turn out to be as perfect and as easy as you had seen it. Having read all of your other books I am well aware that a seers visions are not necessarily fact of the future, but seeing is believing.

Anyhow, I am very excited for this new book. It will be a lovely read and I even have a spot ready for it on my bookshelf.

Just one more day and it will be released in the UK (ooh, and it’s out of stock on Amazon already)!
Lovely interview, Mrs Marillier, and may I say you’ve done beautifullyespecially with the medical challenges you had to face.

Slainte Mhath agus Nollaig chridheil huibh ( if a little early)

It’s interesting that Juliet says Felix’s POV came easier than expected. I wrote from an aggressive male family member’s POV in one of my creative writing classes once and it just poured out of me; although that’s obviously easier than for a character you made up. I also didn’t know Juliet had been sick, so I’m very happy with her health! Cannot wait for this book (and the next and the next…). Excited for the U.S. launch since I’ve seen reactions from earlier release locations!

  9. Steph on December 7, 2010 at 6:39 am

I just reread the first 4 books, before I was even aware of a 5th! Perfect timing. I’ve been a huge fan since 2000; it’s wonderful to be able to revisit these characters, like old friends. Thanks WU, and thanks Juliet!

New Sevenwaters, yay! BRB rushing out to Borders . . .

  11. Raj on December 7, 2010 at 6:58 am

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, JM. Can’t wait to read the book. :)

  12. Kathleen on December 7, 2010 at 7:02 am

Yay!!! Only book this year that I’ve been counting down to the release date! And it’s here!!

  13. Chachic on December 7, 2010 at 7:13 am

Happy book birthday to Seer of Sevenwaters! :) I can’t wait to read it. Unfortunately, it won’t be available in local bookstores so I need to order it from abroad (probably Book Depository). Thank you so much for this interview. I’m looking forward to reading this one because it has a different POV. Also, it’s good to know that Juliet is doing better now and she’s back to writing her amazing books.

  14. Madhura on December 7, 2010 at 7:25 am

I can’t wait to read this book!!
And yes, the premise is definitely something everyone can relate to. I am at that stage of life where things are changing so much and I know that a year from now, nothing will be what it is now and it scares the hell out of me. But ever since reading Daughter of the Forest, I have derived strength from your books and I know Seer of Sevenwaters will be no different!
Thank you for everything Juliet! Your books are the best!

  15. Maria M on December 7, 2010 at 7:36 am

    Nice interview! :)
I’m really looking forward to reading this book!

  16. Peachy on December 7, 2010 at 8:13 am

This sounds enchanting. I loved Juliet’s Heart’s Blood – it wrapped me around her little finger. Hope you’re feeling better, Juliet!

  17. Brianna Flonc on December 7, 2010 at 9:12 am

I am really excited to read this book! One of my plans that I wrote in my Bucket List (for fun) is to read all of Juliet Marillier’s stories. Each one takes me on a different adventure and introduces me to new characters I wish I could meet in real life. The Sevenwaters stories are still my favorites of hers, so I am so happy they continue to grow. It is my aspiration to be a writer and publish a fantasy novel. Thank you so much for the inspiration Juliet! :)

  18. Jael McHenry on December 7, 2010 at 9:13 am

Oh, wow! Congratulations on the new book! Sounds like a creative triumph in challenging personal circumstances. I’m amazed by your spirit. Thanks for sharing with us.

  19. Jeanne Kisacky on December 7, 2010 at 9:21 am

Congratulations on the release! And on triumphing over the inner medical demons. I’ve been a fan of the Sevenwaters trilogy since a friend recommended it to me years ago.

  20. Danielle Parsons on December 7, 2010 at 9:31 am

Can’t believe I’m in the US when the new book is being released, if you’d gone to Brisbane instead of Perth for a signing I think I would have died. I did, however, bring Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows and Heart’s Blood with me… I never travel without those three.
Can’t wait to read, and be enthralled by, Seer of Sevenwaters and add it to my ever growning library; complete with all your other books :)
    Have a great day!
    Danielle
    xoxo

  21. Jen on December 7, 2010 at 9:34 am

Wow I hope this book comes to my country soon! I can’t wait to read it :) I also didn’t know that Juliet had been sick, I am so glad you are on the mend!

  22. Rowie on December 7, 2010 at 9:55 am

    Dear Juliet,
If I could’ve magically transported myself to Australia to get a copy of Seer of Sevenwaters, I would’ve done it 5 days ago! I’d never let the chance to have a peak at the wonderful world you created, slip between my fingers. Let alone the chance to view the events of the story from the man’s point of view!
I really admire the strength you showed by working while you were being treated for your cancer and still finishing this book so fast!
    Lots of love,
    Rowie

  23. Joe Mello on December 7, 2010 at 9:57 am

This is the first time I am encountering both this site and Juliet Marillier’s work. I am interested in seeing how she handles multiple POV’s – they make sense here. I like that she chose to make the character with memory loss operate in the present – nice touch.

It would be interesting to see how approachable this novel is, as a standalone story, since I have not read her other work.

I am also always heartened to hear of women who overcome serious illnesses like breast cancer. That also begs a question – are there good novels that deal with this illness?

    Thanks,
    JM (another one)

I can still remember when I first picked up a copy of Daughter of the Forest as well!

I’ve been reading the young adult series and while they are good, I miss the length of an adult novel. Heart’s Blood was so good to read and I can’t wait until I can get my hands on this.

Gutted when I found out I wouldn’t make the Perth signing as I don’t fly home until two weeks after :(
I mostly reside in the UK so I’m particularly looking forward to getting back to Aus and getting a copy – even if it won’t be signed. Reading this has just made me even more excited!

  26. Anna Elliott on December 7, 2010 at 10:46 am

And I was proud of myself for writing my 3rd book while pregnant–can’t even imagine the strength and determination you must have needed to write this book while undergoing cancer treatments. Huge congratulations, Juliet! I’ve been marking the days till I could read Sibeal’s story all year long; she’s been one of my favorite characters since meeting her in Child of the Prophesy.

  27. Kit Dunsmore on December 7, 2010 at 11:00 am

I’m intrigued. The Sevenwaters series sounds like something I’d love to read, and I will be looking for these books now that I know about them. I’m also curious as to how the two POVs are handled and how they impact the story-telling.

Congratulations on being able to stick to your writing despite your cancer. You are a wonderful role model for the rest of us. If someone who is ill can get their book written anyway, what excuse do I have? I better go do some writing…

  28. Ariel on December 7, 2010 at 11:24 am

I’ve always enjoyed your first person narrations, and found them well written. I look forward to this new venture in dual POVs.

  29. Jan O'Hara on December 7, 2010 at 11:46 am

Juliet, I don’t read nearly enough of your genre because those I’ve tried are often mostly about the external conflict. I’m really intrigued by this and will definitely read it. Knowing what you went through while you wrote it will lend it an extra poignancy, I’m sure.

    Glad you are well!

  30. Kristie on December 7, 2010 at 11:54 am

Love! I can’t wait to get it! Thank you for all your books Juliet.

I’m so excited to have discovered an author new to me in a genre I haven’t read in too long, but the genre that is nearest and dearest to me and first developed my passion for books. This story sounds fascinating, compelling, unique and thrilling. I cannot wait to read it! And will look for the others as well. Best wishes for your continued recovery.

Sibeal is one of my favorite characters as well! I can’t wait to get inside her head. What will she choose – or is there a way to have both? I need to know. :) And to a wonderful writer and an all-around lovely person – congrats on your success and a return to good health. We love you!

how exciting, to have a new JM book out! I think Sevenwaters (then three books) was my first true introduction to romance, a genre I’m now passionate about.

Just so happens I’m currently reading The Well of Shades – and really enjoying it (I couldn’t help but feel that Faolan was the true romantic hero of Blade of Fortriu – an interesting progression of books, for that! Eile – love her!)

  53. Dana on December 8, 2010 at 9:33 am

FINALLY another Sevenwaters book ready, and now it is sold out at amazon. I pre-ordered this book ages ago, relly unnerved my husband (who alsways seems to note I hold another JM-book in hands, “dindn’t you read that one already five times?” – “No, it’s about the 6th…”)and it seems to be forever until it will arrive in Germany, now they say it is up to 5 weeks! (so, if there’s any chance…)
I’m really looking forward to the 2-person-narrative and to leave real life behind for some hours and become part of Sevenwaters once more.

Though…I am hoping on some point there will be another Fortriu-book.

Great that you are well again, Juliet, keep going!

  54. Lydia on December 8, 2010 at 9:56 am

Wow! I can not believe there is another book to read of Sevenwaters. I can hardly contain myself! I heard about your books from a friend, started reading them and couldn’t put them down. I love how the story continues on with the descendants of Sorcha!

Thank you for your captivating stories and beautiful characters!

  55. Bernadette on December 8, 2010 at 10:20 am

I’m looking forward to your newest Sevenwaters novel, I only wish it wasn’t being released a week before my Finals Week. :-P Ah well. I should be responsible, and put off reading your novel, but I don’t know if I can help myself. Maybe, in that way, I can empathize with Sibeal! What should I do? vs What do I want to do?

  56. Meike on December 8, 2010 at 4:16 pm

The sevenwaters novels (or in dutch triologie van de zeven wateren) are so wonderful! Heir to sevenwaters has been a plesant surprise as a sequal to the first tree books, but an other one is even better! I haven’t been much of a reader before I discovered your books, but with these books I tend to sit on my bed (or when it doesn’t snow like now, in my garden) all day with your books in my hand. I’ve read the first tree books sevenwaters at least three times, and every time they seem to be different and pull me in to the story even deeper. Short said.. I love it; Ik houd van deze boeken!

  57. JenelC on December 8, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Your ability to finish this book on time with all of your challenges is an inspiration to me to stay motivated on my current project. If you can write a book while battling cancer, I can write one while finishing my PhD. Thank you!

  58. Katrina on December 8, 2010 at 6:57 pm

I am so excited for this book! Whenever I’ve picked up one of Juliet’s book, I’ve read it in one sitting, even if that means being up all night. They’re just so amazingly beautiful! I’m taking a course in Irish folklore next semester and I’m very excited.

  59. Alex on December 8, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I have been working my way through your books with religious zeal since I was referred to Daughter of the Forest. This one sounds amazing! Please never stop writing. (oh, and by the way, your publisher has been doing an excellent job with the covers- keep up the good work!)

Wow I can’t wait until this book is available in Trinidad! From the first mention of Sibeal, I remember being fascinated and wanting to know her story. And I’m happy to hear that there’ll be a male co-narrator this time, in the previous books I always wondered what the guy was thinking. So keep up the amazing story-telling Juliet. For some people (like yours truly) books like yours are the reason we fell in love with the library. Take care!

I am so excited for the next book in the sevenwaters series. I always take Daughter of the Forest with me to read every time I travel. It is somehow very comforting to me. I love the world Juliet Marillier has created in these novels. They are just as beautiful and magical for me to read for the 100th time as they were for me to read the first time.

  68. Lulu on December 9, 2010 at 11:15 pm

I am so happy that she have chosen to write about Sibeal in your new book, i have read all of her books a thousand times and read them again everytime that i start to feel down. as soon as i read CHILD OF THE PROPHECY i wanted the next one to be about Sibeal because she was so mature at the age of even eight, i wanted to know more.

i cant wait to read the new book!

Thanks for opening the giveaway to worldwide entries.

    Much appreciated.

  71. Katherine G on December 10, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I just finished the Bredei trilogy. Taking a little breather before I immerse myself in the Seven water series . . . as for me really good plots and characters tend to take precedence over house cleaning and common sense. Best wishes to you with the cancer. I am going through a bit of that here as well.

  72. Nicole M on December 10, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I finished reading ‘heir of sevenwaters’ in summer, because it was just translated in dutch. It was an amazing story and I can’t wait reading Seer of Seven Waters, which I will definitely read in English, because it takes much too long to wait until it is translated in Dutch.
Sibeal always fashinated me and I’m curious about Felix. It should be fun, reading the story out of his perspective.
It’s one of the books I really have to buy, no matter what my parents say about buying books for no reason (because I used to be allowed only to buy them when we were going on holiday, or with my birthday of Sinterklaas (the dutch Santa Claus)). But I can’t wait ’till this book is in stores here!

  73. Jeaneas F on December 11, 2010 at 4:48 am

I can’t wait to read your latest installment; they’ve all been so mesmerizing on their own, and I’m so impressed that you followed each installment with equal caliber. I’m so excited that Sibeal is one of the main characters; she was always my favourite character, because like her, I am an old soul. Also, I admire your persevering strength and spirit and hope you continue to reach the apex of your health and mind.

    Dear Juliet

The first book that I have read is Daughter of the Forest … it reminded me of the Swan Princess..it was fascinating and magical. As I am not a great fan of Fantasy stories, you really have changed my opinion of Fantasy stories. Ever since, I have fallen in love with your book and have read every book the library has to offer!
    Purchasing
Mind you…You are the only author that I loved!

I love Juliet´s books, most of all the Sevenwaters series. They are one of those books, you have to think about again and again, even a long time after reading.Juliet creats a unique athmosphere in her books. They are my favourite books and so I´m extremely happy, that there is a new sequel. I read Heir to Sevenwaters within one night and I´m looking so forward to hold Seer of Sevenwaters in my hand.
Thanke you for writing those wonderful books.

I just finished reading “Seer of Sevenwaters” and I am just amazed. When I read “Heir” It felt like coming home to place I had always been and then reading “Seer” it was that experience and more. I felt every bit back in that place I had grown to love and the island has always felt like just another extension of the Sevenwaters woods. I have to admit my mind is greedy for the next book and chapter in the story.

I love your books, the emotions, characters, settings and plots are masterpieces in themselves that work perfectly together to form a tapestry of breathtaking art. These characters are so real that when thinking of them you consider them friends instead of imaginary elements of a book. can’t wait to read Seer of Sevenwaters as the Sevenwaters Series is a magnificent collection.

You don’t have to enter me into the contest–this book is on my holiday wish list–but I want to join the others in saying that your perseverance throughout cancer treatment is truly an inspiration, Juliet. I know I’ll love this novel. Congratulations!

Mrs Marillier, I hope that you are feeling better after your recent illness. My thoughts are with you and your famiy.

I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in the Sevenwaters series! It will be interesting reading one of your books with dual POVs. It sounds very mysterious and I’m eager to start reading it!

I only came across your books about a year ago, and they have kept me entertained. I especially enjoyed Bridei’s Chronicles, and would love another book in this series.

Many thanks for all the books that you have written!

Dear Juliet, Let me first say that you are undoubtedly one of my favorite authors of all time. I will confess, when I get one of your books, I can’t restrain myself, and read it in one sitting. There’s nothing better than having a book you absolutely cannot put down! Awhile after I had read Child of the Prophecy, I was back in the library to re-read one of your other books as I was upset the trilogy had ended. I was completely surprised and ecstatic when I found Heir to Sevenwaters on the shelf! I had absolutely no idea that you had decided to expand the trilogy, and I was so thrilled! I’m eagerly awaiting Seer of Sevenwaters, as I am currently in Ireland and won’t have a chance to get it until I return to the States. Your books have helped make my trip and travels here so much more magical. I am so sorry to hear about your struggle with breast cancer, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for creating such literary magic. -Jessica

    Thank you for this contest!

I remember picking up the Sevenwater Trilogy back when I lived in Tauranga, NZ, back in 2001/2002…It made my exchange student life so much more enjoyable :D

  94. kitty on December 12, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I am a survivor of breast cancer … diagnosed in 2005 … my cancer gave me a wonderful outlook on life … enjoy every moment and share that enjoyment with everyone you meet … I am also a coincidental patron of this website … interesting that I would come to your sight so that I could share this with a woman that I know will also enjoy the Sevenwaters series … only to find that tonight is the deadline to win your new story … I read the first three while recovering from the masectomy and chemo … and I just finished reading Heir to Sevenwaters … the women in your stories are fantastically heroic and I am looking forward to reading the fifth story!

I am so glad that Sibeal gets a chance to come into her own after the trial of growing up with her physical disability. I knew she had the heart, and now I can follow her as she becomes the person Juliet can make her.

When I first posted, I said I would post again after my journey through Seer was over; I have to say that Juliet did a wonderful job with this story. And like every time I pick up a new Sevenwaters book, I felt as if I was visiting my family and friends after a long time away from home. I have to commend Juliet for making us feel so at comforted by her stories, but also giving us the elements of excitement and surprise. It was both beautiful and thrilling as I expected. It was also unexpected in many ways. Thanks again Juliet for another great adventure.
