How to Plot a Novel Visually: The Index Card System

Today’s main post won’t be about plotting but will be a special announcement that will be up in several hours. Still, we didn’t want to the day to pass without a little plot talk. I happened upon an interesting article on Associated Content this past weekend. Here’s the synopsis:

This article is for the person who wants to see every piece of the puzzle and be able to arrange and rearrange that puzzle without starting from square one. It’s a way of plotting your novel that uses nothing more than index cards and a box to keep them in line.

    This is a common way to plot a screenplay, too, which I use a lot. In fact I usually write so much on the cards that by the time I actaully start writing I can usually whip out a draft in no time at all.

    Index cards or Post-it cards are a BLESSING! They helped me organise my scenes into sections and rearrange them to make sense and for my novel to flow smoothly.
